Julius Caesar

This production was special because it was not supported by the lighting, scenic, or costume departments. This required sound to pull a lot of weight in building the world as well as filling the space. I used a method of generating large amounts of content and mixing them in the space during rehearsals in a way that felt like painting a landscape. I had noise play throughout the entire show to raise the noise floor. I filled the space with white noise, music, rain, drums, and thunder, until the moment that caesar was stabbed and fell. I then sucked out all the sound and let the impact of silence take over the iconic moment.

Here is a sample of various tracks and soundscapes that I used in Qlab to “paint the world” of this production. I used techniques such as long fades to blend soundscapes together, manipulating the speed of tracks to get multiple versions, and layering many tracks over themselves at different speeds.
